Brief: Respond to a large body of research looking closely at the statistic “97% of women have experienced sexual assault” in different forms.
Consider how this information and research is collected and presented. Its important to keep in mind that the target audience is not specifically women- rather this project is aimed at all genders, universally, regardless of age. Use this as a tool to inform and change readers perspective on this issue. How will the final outcome exist? It is worth exploring different options to find the most befitting format depending on audiences’ demographics and backgrounds. Legibility is key, the outcome should contain clear text that does not overtake the victims’ narratives, therefore avoid overly expressive and decorative typefaces. Consider composition carefully ensuring the choices are justified from research carried out.
UNDERSTANDING THE LAYOUT/ GRID INFORMED BY RESEARCH:
To create a consistent layout I used the numbers 9, 7 and 3 to create grids and rules. The very top guide was to represent the 3% of women who hadn’t experienced such events and so throughout the entire book I kept that 3% empty from stories to represent the idea of this hasn’t happened and so there is blank space to represent that. It is worth noting that there is doubt that the statistical percentage might actually be higher and closer to 100%, as the 3% of women may simply have chosen to stay silent and not report the incident.
The next line of guide is at the point of 7 cm and then the one after is at 9cm. Most of the text I have used starts off at the point of just the 3% as I wanted it to be that the 97% of the page is filled or so it would be if the story had continued.
I do have short stories in this book and so it is now quite empty spaces but if you create a book on you would only get 3% of the top that’s empty and the 97% of the page is filled with text.
